DISCOVERY BIBLE STUDY
Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a method that enables people to read the Bible and discover what it says. Simple, memorable questions allow participants to move from general to specific conclusions. The same questions are used each week, making it simple for anyone to guide a DBS study. In our groups, we ask that you stick to this simple way of studying unless we are all doing something different together. Unlike other Bible studies, we don’t see this as a classroom with teachers and students. In the DBS way of thinking, the Holy Spirit is the teacher, and the Bible is the curriculum. We trust that God’s people, filled with God’s Spirit, can read and understand God’s Word. These studies work best in small groups of four to ten people in a relational and friendly setting, often allowing for deeper conversation. The questions promote the understanding and authority of scripture and equip people for practical discipleship. DBS works because it is simple. The structure is easy to teach, remember, and replicate. That means that anyone can run a DBS anywhere with anyone else. Consider doing weekly DBS studies with your spouse, children, or anyone you’re trying to disciple. Despite their simplicity, the Discovery Bible Study questions are very powerful, and people often have profound discoveries from the stories and passages they read. In the Great Commission, Jesus said that his disciples were to make disciples and teach them to obey everything he commanded. Our last two questions specifically address obedience and disciple-making. Unlike many traditional Bible studies, we aren’t just trying to acquire biblical information and understanding. We’re actually training people to go out and do what the Scripture commands us to.
